my face hurts

I. Am. Not. Getting. Sick.
I. Am. Not. Getting. Sick.
I ... oh, hell.
I woke up this a.m. with a throbbing headache and aches all over my body. I don’t have a sore throat or runny nose, but I feel it coming.
What sucks is, we leave tomorrow for Gay Days in Orlando. This always happens to me right before a big vacation.

Damn it.

Meanwhile, here’s a new drawing.

An anonymous reader left this comment today:
“Has your blog turned into a posting place for your drawings? Or are you planning on sharing things about your new life in Atlanta? I want to make sure your ok!”

Well, maybe.
To be honest, I’m not sure what this thing is anymore. It’s true that I’ve turned my attention more toward posting my artwork and haven’t invested much time hammering out witty and bite-sized observations about life in the South lately.
Maybe that speaks to my own burnout with blogging, something I’ve watched a lot of previously entertaining sites go through. I think overall it says something about the new phase of my life, when I’m much more focused on my own work (as opposed to putting out somebody else’s shitty magazine) and not nearly as eager to rush to post about every book, movie or album I consume.
I’ve considered spinning all my artwork off onto a different site, or else making this one all art, all the time, but that just feels like a lot of effort right now.
In the meantime, here are two new drawings, both of them from the Loaf. The above deserves note because my BF actually liked it — such a rare honor these days. The one below made me happy mainly because of the first frame. What’s that old saying about quit while you’re a head?

And to Anonymous: Yes, I am OK. I appreciate you caring — seriously. In fact, I’m awesome. How are you?

gojira!

The Your Face blog made me giggle this week: That smartypants Damien Weighill offered up this inspired rendition of, um, my face. How did he know know that I heart Godzilla?

final cut

Cutter
I did two versions of this week’s drawing for Creative Loafing: One with a more solid purple background, and then the one above. I ended up going with this one, but I’m not sure which was actually better.

Blot: A 24-year-old man contacted police and accused his ex-girlfriend of cutting his arms ...

(Here’s the other version of the drawing. Thoughts?)

face off

Faun-ing for Your Face
I’ve mentioned here before that I’m amused by Damien Weighill’s clever Your Face blog.

Above is a quick little doodle I hammered out in answer to the artist’s challenge to draw his face. No doubt I’ve had Pan’s Labyrinth on the brain lately.

maybe it was aldous huxley?

All hail the e-newsletter

My latest illustration for AirTran’s Go magazine is now online. The column this time dealt with writing killer e-newsletters.
I went for a slightly different character style than normal, not my usual tragic cartoon folks but something a bit more abstract. These figures reminded me of drawing I recall from the cover of a sci-fi paperback my father had from the mid-’70s, but I have no inkling now what the title of the book was.
